Moving MultiLedger Mac 6.0.X or 7.X files to MultiLedger Windows 6.0.X or 7.X or Windows to Mac.

Before You Start…

    • Make sure you have made a backup of the company files and that you can open that backup.
    • You should install your new MultiLedger for Windows application onto your PC. For instructions on installing MultiLedger for Windows, see Getting Started.
    • You should have an external disk that can be read on both computers. A USB, zip, or CD all work well.).

Renaming Your Company Files

Important: To transfer files from the Macintosh to Windows, file names need to be in the 8 alpha-numeric character format, with no spaces or non-standard characters. If you need to rename your company files, do the following:

1. Open your MultiLedger files as you normally would on your Mac.

2. Choose Rename Files from the File menu.

3. If necessary, type in a name for your company files that is up to eight alpha-numeric characters long, with no spaces or non-standard characters. Non-standard characters include: / : ; * ? ” < >.

4. Click Rename.

Transferring Your Mac MultiLedger Files to Windows

You are now ready to transfer your MultiLedger company files to Windows. Keep in mind that files can be transferred back and forth between platforms, but you will need to use an external disk that can be read by both computers.

1. Insert the external disk into the drive of your Macintosh.

2. If necessary, open your MultiLedger for Mac company, then choose Backup Company from the File menu.

3. Save the .zip backup to the external disk.Keep in mind that you may have to change folders in the dialog box (or click Desktop or Drive) to locate the external disk.

4. Eject the external disk from your Mac and insert it into your PC.

5. Start MultiLedger for Windows on your PC.

6. Choose Restore Company (Backup) from the File menu.If Restore Company (Backup) is dimmed, you may need to choose Close Company first.

7. Choose the external disk from the Look In pop-up list.

8. Highlight the .zip backup, then click Open.An Extract To dialog appears.

9. Select the MLedger folder in the Program Files directory on the C drive (or wherever you would like to store your company files), then click OK. The restored files are saved in the directory you choose and they open automatically.

Transferring Your Windows MultiLedger Files to Macintosh

1. Insert an external disk into your PC’s disk drive.

2. If necessary, open your MultiLedger for Windows company, then choose Backup Company from the File menu.

3. Save the .zip backup to the external disk.

Keep in mind that you may have to change folders in the Save In dialog box to locate the external disk.

4. Eject the external disk from your PC and insert it into your Mac.

5. Open MultiLedger for Windows on your Mac.

6. Choose Restore Company (Backup) from the File menu.

If Restore Company (Backup) is dimmed, you may need to choose Close Company first.

7. Choose the external disk in the dialog.

Keep in mind that you may have to change folders in the dialog box (or click Desktop or Drive) to locate the external disk.

8. Highlight the .zip backup, then click Open.

A dialog appears.

9. Select the folder where you want to store the company files using the dialog.

Important: Unless your intent is to replace a set of files with the restored files, you should avoid selecting the folder where your original company files are located, as the restored files will replace your original files.

Tip: You can create a new folder for the restored files by clicking New Folder on this dialog. Name the folder, then click Create. The folder you just created is automatically selected as the location for the restored files.

10. Click Choose.

The restored files open automatically. The backup archive remains unchanged and can be restored again on either a Mac or PC.
